Trumpette's Jon Stevenson
We've all seen those darling Mary Jane Trumpette socks, their cheeky bright pink and zebra boxes lining store windows, their spectrum of colors splashing across baby magazines or swaddling little feet at a play group near you. Who knew specialty baby socks was such a sought after niche? And what's the secret behind their popularity? Maybe it's the fact that trumpette socks are the brainchild of a man. A single father no less.
In fact, Trumpette designer Jon Stevenson, former menswear specialist, decided to begin designing baby clothes when he adopted his son Nicky. Much like the stories of many women designers, after adopting his son, Stevenson realized what was out there for baby clothes was pretty limited and he wanted to design something for his son that was special and stylish.
He began his first line of baby clothes, selling them out of his San Francisco-based menswear store, and it was the little trumpette socks that sold like hot cakes. The response to the socks was so definitive; Stevenson began to concentrate on turning Trumpette into a specialty sock line. We love the Trumpette Mary Jane socks bright line, with six pairs of socks in shocking fuchsia, chartreuse, and tomato. These modern colors are a refreshing reprieve from the plethora of baby pastels out there, in keeping with Stevenson's desire to create clothes that are more "contemporary, less done-to-death cute." If you loved the Mary Jane look, be sure to see Stevenson's adorable fall foot debut, a dainty pair of socks that mimic ankle lacing ballerina shoes. Also cute for fall are his formal baby bibs.
With Trumpette locations in Tokyo, Paris, New York, London, and San Francisco, Stevenson is single-handedly proving that, in terms of baby foot fashion, father really does know best!
